About the VTFC
The Virginia Tech Fencing Club is a student-run Recreational Sports Club that was established in 1979. Our purpose is to promote the popular international sport of fencing. VTFC members are enrolled students, faculty, staff, and other members from the community not affiliated with Virginia Tech.
We field both men's and women's teams in the 3 separate conferences in all three Olympic weapons (foil, epee, and sabre). In addition, a large majority of VTFC members participate in United State Fencing Association events both state and nation wide.
The club has passed its 30th year at Tech, and therefore VTFC has an extensive list of alumni and senior members. As a result, new members to the club receive the benefit of many years of experience passed down through the ranks. New School (21st Century!):This section covers history from 2000 to 2009 as we know it!In the 2006 USFA Nationals Michelle Yancey (Div II Women's Epee), Katie Wong (Div III Women's Epee) and Austin Carter (Div III Men's Foil & Div II Men's Epee) represented the VTFC in Atlanta, GA. Michelle earned her E and I don't think there was anything else eventful. In other news, during the summer of 2008 the dance room and locker area was flooded causing the removal of the big white, wooden lockers from the storage closet. Thankfully the "Epee House" of Michelle Yancey was able to store all the club gear until the dance floor and storage area was redone. Austin Carter earned the rank of "club old guy" taking on unofficial coaching roles when Aaron Caba disappeared to take care of a new baby. He also earned his "A" in Epee at the Tech Open in 2007. Finally turning to the bright side, in foil Austin earned his "C" at some tournament in the fall of 2008. Some of the newer rankings belong to Nick Balanc (epee) and Matt Burgess (saber) who earned "E"s in their respective weapons. Also worth noting, Jonathan Skeate became a bonafied referee and jumped from an "E08" to a "C08" in Epee. Almost-Could-Be-Called-Recent History (1990s):In #### we hosted the Virginia Tech Open, a club-run USFA event. All three events were mixed. Foil was a B-2 tournament with 39 participants, Epee was a B-2 tournament with 35 participants, and Sabre was a C-1 tournament with 15 participants. The Tech Open is now hosted every year at Virginia Tech during the fall semester. We sent two members, Anne Kurtz and Alex Marschner to the Junior Olympic Qualifiers at VAF. Alex took first in Men's Junior Saber and will be going to the Junior Olympics in Colorado Springs next February #### The club has placed very well at many competitions. We usually have about two members in the top ten of the tournaments we attend. In 1998 and 1999 we have had many people earn ratings in the various weapons. Nat Burke earned his "A" in epee and a 'B' in foil during the first semester. Jason Wagner, Mike Brown, and Anthony Mansfield all have earned a "C" in epee; Mike Brown also earned a "C" in foil. Kadircan Abali and Rob Holloway earned an "E" in sabre this year. The men this year had a decent showing at the collegiate level. The epee team was in 4th place going into champs. All three teams had a good showing. Individually, Anthony Mansfield and Kadircan Abali both had a good year. Kadircan Abali was ranked 6th in foil going into champs and Anthony Mansfield was ranked 6th in epee going into champs. Ancient History (before 1990):"The club has placed very well at many competitions. We usually have about two members in the top ten of the tournaments we attend. We are hoping to have more before the season is over.""The men this year had a decent showing at the collegiate level. The epee team was in 4th place going into champs.
