About the VTFC
The Virginia Tech Fencing Club is a student-run Recreational Sports Club. Our purpose is to promote the popular international sport of fencing. VTFC members are enrolled students, faculty, staff, and other members from the community not affiliated with Virginia Tech.
We field both men's and women's teams in the 3 separate conferences in all three Olympic weapons (foil, epee, and sabre). In addition, a large majority of VTFC members participate in United State Fencing Association events both state and nation wide.
The club has passed its 30th year at Tech, and therefore VTFC has an extensive list of alumni and senior members. As a result, new members to the club receive the benefit of many years of experience passed down through the ranks. Almost-Could-Be-Called-Recent History:A few years ago we hosted the Virginia Tech Open, a club-run USFA event. All three events were mixed. Foil was a B-2 tournament with 39 participants, Epee was a B-2 tournament with 35 participants, and Sabre was a C-1 tournament with 15 participants. The Tech Open is now hosted every year at Virginia Tech during the fall semester. We sent two members, Anne Kurtz and Alex Marschner to the Junior Olympic Qualifiers at VAF. Alex took first in Men's Junior Saber and will be going to the Junior Olympics in Colorado Springs next February (actually 2 Februarys ago). History:As far as recent history goes, no one has bothered to update this page in the last couple of years, so there isn't much of a written record of the club's doings. Hopefully this will change in the near future, so stay tuned. Recent results from collegiate competitions can be viewed on the results page. Our five year plan includes increasing the size of the club, improving both our mad fencing skillz, doing a little internal bonding, and looking at asking Tech to make a Varsity Fencing Team.Ancient History:"The club has placed very well at many competitions. We usually have about two members in the top ten of the tournaments we attend. This year (1998-99) we have had many people earn ratings in the various weapons. Nat Burke earned his 'A' in epee and a 'B' in foil during the first semester. Jason Wagner, Mike Brown, and Anthony Mansfield all have earned a 'C' in epee; Mike Brown also earned a 'C' in foil. Kadircan Abali and Rob Holloway earned an 'E' in sabre this year. We are hoping to have more before the season is over.""The men this year had a decent showing at the collegiate level. The epee team was in 4th place going into champs. All three teams had a good showing. Individually, Anthony Mansfield and Kadircan Abali both had a good year. Kadircan Abali was ranked 6th in foil going into champs and Anthony Mansfield was ranked 6th in epee going into champs. " |
