Virginia Tech Fencing Club Minutes, 3/17/04

I?m sorry for the delay; I have had computer difficulty for about 5 days now. Here are you?re long awaited minutes.

Quote of the VIWFA tournament: "fly like a butterfly...sting like a butterfly."

Alumni Tournament:
Ohhh yes, it?s that time again. Time to get our butts kicked by our forbearers. May 1st is the date, and we are looking into having reduced fees this year (probably only 10$ per fencer, alums and all). We are currently on the prowl for a place big enough to hold an eating meeting.

USACFC:
We?ve got the bus all set, and we?ll be leaving early Friday morning (April 2nd) and getting back around 9 am Monday morning. We?re looking at a 15 hour drive, but we also have the benefit of sharing the cost with another school, so going a little out of the way to pick them up isn?t so bad. More info will be sent to those involved in the trip very soon.

Annual Meeting:
Here are the results of the annual meeting, held last Wednesday. Congratulations to all of our new officers, kudos to our current officers for all of their hard work, and of course, hurray for the constitution.

President: Jennifer Webster
Vice President: Megan Olsen
Treasurer: James Dykes
Sergeant @ Arms: Kristin Denzene
Armorer: Paul Youmans
Member @ Large: Jamie Dalton
Historian: Jen Lin

Constitution changes as they shall now read:

Section II, Online voting
6) During the week prior, and until the day before the annual meeting, anyone wishing to vote online may send his/her votes to the neutral party, appointed by the officers.
7) The neutral party will bring all votes received to the annual meeting, where they will then be added to the votes of the attending club members.

Article V ? Team Functions
Section II, Squad Captains

Each women's and men's collegiate teams shall have squad captains, referred to as "Squad Captains". The Squad Captains will be chosen after the fall semester team tryouts. The squad captain will be responsible for deciding the line-up for each weapon and making substitutions when appropriate. The Squad Captains will be chosen in the following manner:
(1) The decision of who is squad captain will be determined by the chosen squad members within one week after tryouts. They will unanimously nominate one person, on or off the team, whom they feel fills the requirements for squad captain and will present this nomination to the officers for approval. A simple majority vote of the officers is required for approval.
(2)The squad captain nominee will be chosen based on the following criteria, in no particular order:

i) Active participation in practices.
ii) Proficiency in the weapon.
iii) Knowledge of the rules.
iv) Sportsmanship.

(3) In the event that the above nominee for squad captain declines the duty of squad captain, or fails to gain the approval of the officers, then a new squad captain nominee will be chosen by the squad members and be presented to the officers for approval. In the event a squad captain is not chosen, or approved, before the first team competition, then the team captain will appoint a temporary squad captain until such time as a squad captain can be approved by the officers.
(4) nominations shall be given to the Sergeant at Arms in the form of a written proposal and presented to the officers for review.

Fundraising:
We are hoping to get the 50-50 raffle up and running within the next week. We?ll pass out tickets very soon so everyone can get selling before schedules fill up with exams.

Roanoke Newbie-Tournament:
The date is not set just yet, but it will most likely be April 15th (the other possibility is the 8th). This is the tournament where our new fencers can travel to Roanoke to fence with the class there in an informal tournament. This is good way to get strip time and have some fun, so make plans to come! More information will be out about this soon, but I wanted to give everyone a heads up.

Armourer Night:
Friday night practices have unofficially been dubbed armourer nights. Come out, fence, and maybe find out exactly how little lights go off when you make a touch. Consult your friendly local armourer, Paul, for more specifics.

*If you have any questions, comments or concerns, or if you just really like sending emails, please email me (Kristin) ? dnzn@vt.edu

**Weekly officers meetings are held at 6:15pm, Wednesdays, in the second floor cross over lounge of Payne Hall. All are invited to attend.
