25 January 2006 - Apologies To everyone whose email address was abused . . . If you email address is posted on this website you probably recently received an email titled "Get a FREE Vault Guide to Schmoozing: Become a Vault Member". This is apparently because interns at Vault, Inc decided it was ok to manually harvest all of the email addresses posted here and use them for a commercial purpose. Of course, that is not why we posted them here; they were posted here to encourage communication between club members and each other, the officers, and former/future club members. You will notice that the Members page, the Officers page, and both the Men's and Women's team pages have had disclaimers added to them stating that the email addresses contained herein are for private club use only. According to the provisions of the CAN-SPAM act, if a company should ""harvest" email addresses from Web sites of Web services that have published a notice prohibiting the transfer of email addresses for the purpose of sending email," they are in violation of the CAN-SPAM act, and are subject to "fines of up to $11,000 [per violation]." We have now posted a notice. In the future, if you suspect commercial email was sent to you because your email address was harvested from this website, please Report It.

October 10, 2005 - Updates Men's Team has been posted!
Tryouts were a success! Our new Men's Fencing team lineup can be found on the Men's Team page. If you did not make the team, never fear! Next week the beginners class will be over, which means that the fencing ladder will begin again! You can practice your way up the fencing ladder and challenge someone on the team to claim their spot! Remember, our first competition is Sunday, October 23rd! Also, if anyone cares, the minutes from the beginning of this year are up.
September 30, 2005 - +5:00 minutes Men's Team Tryouts!
Men's team tryouts will be held NEXT WEEK! Foil and Sabre tryouts will be held on Monday, 3 October 2005, and Epee tryouts will be held on Wednesday, 5 October 2005. What time, you ask? Tryouts will be held DIRECTLY after the beginner's lesson ends at 8:30pm. ANYONE is welcome to try out for a weapon. What, you don't think you'd make the team? Think AGAIN! There are 12 spots on the Men's Team and we have very few returning fencers to fill them. You have NOTHING to LOSE! September 30, 2005 - Deadline!! Deadline for the Fencing Clinic:
There will be a fencing clinic here at Virginia Tech on October 14-16 (see Calendar for times), and TODAY is the LAST DAY to register and pay the AWESOME PRICE of $30! So get your FORM filled out and turned in! If you wait until next week you will be paying the (slightly less) AWESOME price of $40 for this AWESOME event. AWESOME! September 11, 2005 - Features! Enjoy the New Calendar!
If you check the side menu bar, there is a new link to the "Event Calendar." I found some AWESOME PHP code online, and with some minor modifications (a la VTFC schema), you get one totally awesome calendar. Check it out and let me know what you think! (Note: I am aware that the left menu bar changes sizes when you go into the calendar . . . that is on my "to do" list, but since it is still functional, it is WAY down there.)
August 30, 2005 - More Updates Summary of updates:
- Added USFA events to event schedule. New, exciting calendar possibly coming soon. - Blanked out Men's and Women's team lists, updated aliases for team captains. - Added MACFA, VIWFA, NIWFA, SAC, USACFC, and ABCDEFG events to the events schedule. - Do you like pink?
August 28, 2005 - Updates The Officers page . . .
Contains the correct info (contact, officer nights, etc). Note that we have switched to email aliases for all the officers. The idea behind this is to trade the aliases between the incoming/outgoing officers every year, to make the changing of the guard a little more transparent.
August 24, 2005 - Fun and Games! Student Organization Showcase this Friday!
We will have a booth at the Student Organization Showcase in Squires Commonwealth Ballroom this Friday from 4pm to 8pm! If you can come help hand out flyers, let Sara know!
Fall Demo and Beginner's Lessons!
The beginners class will begin with a demo at 7:45pm on Monday, 5 September 2005. After the demo there will be a brief introduction to the basic footwork used in fencing. Following the demo, there will be 6 weeks of (Free!) beginners lessons, offered every Monday and Wednesday night from 7:30pm to 8:30pm. Both the lessons and the demo will be held in the Dance Room in War Memorial gym (downstairs past the weight room).
August 17, 2005 - T-minus 4 days and counting! Upcoming events:
Team Hokies (aka Hokie move-in) will occur this Friday and Saturday. Ask Sara for more info. Practice will start up at the normal schedule on Monday, 22 August. Saved up agression over the summer? Come vent it on your fellows at the first night of practice!
July 23, 2005 - A Start Check out the member list page.
Let me know what you think. If your information is wrong, please let me know. If you want to have a picture up there (and believe me, I tried to pick the most flattering pictures of people that I could find . . .) then upload a picture to share/member_photos (name the file youremail.jpg) and let me know its there. July 16, 2005 - Happily Ever After Congratulations are in order . . .
July 05, 2005 - Change in Schedule New Summer Practice Dates & Times:
Practices are now to be held from 2pm to 4pm in the Dance Room and will not be held on Fridays. THERE WILL BE NO PRACTICE TODAY, and call [ (540) 818 - 1801 ] or message ['Anarxus'] me ahead of time to see if practices will be held on specific, future Tuesdays. July 04, 2005 - Independence Day Lest we forget:
Take a moment today to think of the members of our club, our university, and our nation that are overseas, carrying out their duty to our country. Send them an email, write them a letter, and let them know that we have not forgotten them!
May 22, 2005 - Summer Practice Summer Practice Dates & Times:
Summer practice hours begin Monday, May 23rd, and will continue until August 12th or so. The dance room will be open from 3pm to 5pm, Monday through Thursday. Contact James for more and/or updated information. May 9, 2005 - Welcome Summer! Summer Fencing - a couple people will be here, and we will have space. More info to come. Summer TO DO List - Here's my list of Things To Do (with the website):
Any other suggestions? Tell me. April 30, 2005 - Ahem . . . Why are you reading this?! You should be at the Alumni Tournament! April 21, 2005 - Alumni Tournament! Setup - We will be setting up for the tournament beginning at 9pm next Friday (29 April) evening. Be there! The more people come to help, the faster we will be done! Schedule - Here is the schedule for . . . well, everthing: 0900 - The gym opens. We'll be in one of the two basketball gyms at the end of the hall.
March 31, 2005 - Meeting New Officers - Congratulations to the officers that were elected last night. There was a great deal of questioning and some fierce debate. New officers will be instated on April 1st, which is ironically the first day of our USACFC trip. Please congratulate the following people: President: James Deykes Amendments - All amendments were passed, some with alterations. Look for a complete list to be on the listserv before Friday! Website: Traditions - Earlier on the 30th, a new page was added to our wonderful website! It is called Traditions, and its purpose is to show our traditions to the world, our new members, or whoever is interested. We are a wonderful club, and we really want to get that across! :) Fundraiser! On the drillfield! - We are still selling Student Crew cards. They are extremely easy to sell, because they are an awesome deal! For $10 you get at least $100 worth of free stuff from local area businesses, and weekly discounts on top of it. Never expires. Next Wednesday and Thursday we will be selling them on the drillfield. Please e-mail James about volunteering to help out at any point during those days. March 18, 2005 - March! Nominations/proposed amendments - Please send either of these to the listserv before next Wednesday. If you are nominated for an office, be sure to accept or decline before next Wednesday as well. Starting on the 23rd (next Wednesday) anyone who is eligible to vote but cannot attend the bi-annual meeting can vote online by sending an e-mail to Jen Lin. Voting for amendments can only be done at the meeting. Bi-annual Meeting - The meeting will be on March 30, 2005 at the normal practice time and location. Since there are a decent number of people running for office and multiple constitution changes, it is very likely that we will not have time for fencing after the meeting. Also, if you would like to vote you must pay dues and show proof of doing so to James by the start of the meeting. Talk to James with any questions on dues. Website: Event Results - VIWFA/NIWFA/MACFA results are in, so look for them to be up soon, as well as a women's cumulative score for the year. Beginners Lessons/Tournament- Beginners lessons will extend through next week due to the issue with getting the gloves. However, this Sunday we will be holding our bi-annual beginner's tournament for anyone who participated in the beginners lessons for the first time this semester. Hopefully you have already let Megan know if you plan to attend, but if not please do so ASAP. Top 3 finishers get medals! Fundraiser! Easy to sell! - We are selling Student Crew cards. They are extremely easy to sell, because they are an awesome deal! For $10 you get at least $100 worth of free stuff from local area businesses, and weekly discounts on top of it. Never expires. If you want more information, talk to James Deykes, Megan Olsen, or Jennifer Webster, or refer to the e-mail James sent out last month. If you want to get some cards to sell (as all of you should!) please talk to the same 3 people, and they'll hook you up. :) March 3, 2005 - Tournaments, Website Updates, YEA! Gear from Tournaments - Please be sure that you turn in gear within the first 2 days of returning from a tournament. Other members may need to use the gear you had checked out for practice or tournaments that next weekend. Please be considerate of the fact that everyone is sharing gear. :) Recent Tournaments - Congratulations to our mens and womens teams, as well as our members that have participated in USFA events in the past month. We've had a very hectic schedule, but now we have a well earned break! Both teams got 2nd at SAC, and the women's team took 1st overall at VIWFA. Website: Event Results - All results that we have are up. Once we get VIWFA results and MACFA/NIWFA results they will be posted. First our historian needs to get over the flu! Look for them after Spring Break. Spring Break - For the first time in at least the last 4 years, we don't have a tournament during spring break! Amazing! So go have fun, and don't get in trouble! Be sure to turn in all gear before leaving, unless you need to check out gear for a tournament over break (there is some USFA). Remember that there will be NO Beginners lessons next week! :) February 7, 2005 - Tournaments, Website Updates...whee!! Gear for Tournaments - Please remember that teams get first pick on gear for tournament weekends. Although we encourage everyone to participate in individual competitions, as a club we have a responsibility to provide gear to the teams before we provide to individuals. We do not usually have problems with having enough gear to go around, but if you plan on going to an individual tournament on the same weekend as a team tournament, you will not be able to check out gear until the teams have done so. Website: Event Results - Event results have been updated in the sense that every result page I could find on our space is now linked on the results page! Also, setup for viewing older results has been changed; hopefully the pattern will be followed by the next few webmasters as well. Website: Pictures - Found some old pictures, so I made a page for them and put them up! Thought I had a few more, but it turns out that was it. I will be putting up pictures soon from last year that never got up there though, and once we start having tournaments, I'll start having pictures of them. :) So look for weekly-ish updates! Website: Old Minutes - So, the Old Minutes page had gotten really ugly, just by the shear volume of minutes that were linked to. So, I redid the way it was organized so that you don't have to pull your hair out! And so the next year's worth of minutes could actually be added.... ;) Fundraiser! Easy to sell! - We are selling Student Crew cards. They are extremely easy to sell, because they are an awesome deal! For $10 you get at least $100 worth of free stuff from local area businesses, and weekly discounts on top of it. Never expires. If you want more information, talk to James Deykes, Megan Olsen, or Jennifer Webster, or refer to the e-mail James sent out last week. If you want to get some cards to sell (as all of you should!) please talk to the same 3 people, and they'll hook you up. :) February 2, 2005 - Let the fun begin! Beginner's Lessons - Lessons began this past Monday, and will continue for 6 weeks, meeting every Monday and Wednesday from 7:30-8:30PM in the Dance Room. E-mail me if you have any questions! Teachers are Alex Marschner and Anne Kurtz. Social - We are planning on going to the A Capella competition (here at VT) on Saturday. It starts at 8PM, so plan to meet us in the front of DBH (Squires parking lot side) by 7:30 so we can sit together! As always, talk to Jamie if you have any questions! Gear - Paul bought new gear!!! We have NEW STUFF!!!! But we still need to keep everything in order and in shape. Please be sure to check equipment back in, and not to keep it for an extended period of time. We may have new gear to add to the old, but we still have more people than we have gear! So please do not claim gear to be your own. We might chase you down! Or at least Paul will.... ;) Gear Cleaning - Please consider taking the gear you normally wear home and washing it so we can keep everything clean and keep all the fencers healthy. No, this statement does not contradict the statement above, as you should only have to take it home for a few days to wash/dry it! Any questions on this subject should be aimed at La Presidente. Be sure you check out gear, and remember to check it back in when you bring it back!
January 16, 2005 - Welcome Back! New Semester - Well, it's a new semester and a new year! Hopefully everyone is ready for a good semester and lots of tournaments! The first team tournament is the beginning of February, which is only a few months away! Hope to see you all at practice tomorrow! :) Beginner's Lessons - I know a lot of people have been e-mailing me about beginner's lessons, so here is the info! They will start on Monday the 31st, at 7:45PM in the Dance Room in War Memorial Gym. It will begin with the usual demo, with classes starting directly afterwards and continuing for 6 weeks every Monday and Wednesday from 7:30-8:30PM. E-mail me if you have any questions! Officer Nights - Officer nights will be changed soon to accommodate officers' schedules. If you're interested at all, you can check the officer page for any updates that are made, or the board in the dance room. Gear - Please consider taking the gear you normally wear home and washing it so we can keep everything clean and keep all the fencers healthy. Any questions on this subject should be aimed at La Presidente. Be sure you check out gear, and remember to check it back in when you bring it back!
November 30, 2004 - 2 weeks left!!! OH MY! Website Rant - So, Mozilla is driving me up the wall. They implemented font color style sheet controls correctly but not background. What does that mean? It means our schedule page had blank places on it for anyone uses Mozilla until today. If Mozilla wants to be the next IE, I suggest that they learn to interpret websites correctly! Anyways, if you see anything funky on the website please continue to let me know. Pot Luck Dinner - Pot Luck dinner at Megan's apartment Friday night! E-mail Jamie with what you want to bring or if you have any questions, and e-mail Megan if you need directions. End of Semester Banquet - Will be at Cinco de Mayo this year due to numerous El Guads complaints (food, waiting time, etc). Should be a blast; e-mail Jamie if you need a ride to get there. It will be on the 8th, which is the last day of class! Always a blast and there will be plenty of awards to hand out! Gear - Please consider taking the gear you normally wear home and washing it so we can keep everything clean and keep all the fencers healthy. Any questions on this subject should be aimed at La Presidente. Be sure you check out gear, and remember to check it back in when you bring it back!
November 15, 2004 - It's almost time for break! Ratings - Congrats to everyone earned a new rating this weekend, or confirmed one they already had! :) Canned Food Drive - Please remember to bring in 2 or 3 canned goods by the end of this week so that we can help out the less fortunate in the area for Thanksgiving. If you don't bring any in, we'll be very disappointed! Please help out this good cause since the trick-or-treating for cans was a bust. Tournaments - There are 2 individual tournaments coming up this weekend. Women's Team - The women's team tryouts occurred last week, and the teams have been announced both on the listserv and on the website. Squad Captain choices are due in writing to Dustin by this Wednesday so that the officers can accept/decline nominations. Congratulations to everyone that made the team! It should be a fun year. :)
October 27, 2004 - It's almost November! Ratings - Congrats to everyone that has been earning their ratings this year. Dustin earned and then confirmed his E04 in sabre, and Jen Lin earned her E04 in Sabre this weekend; earlier in the semester Paul Youmans earned is E04 in Foil, and this past summer Bill Bussone earned his E04 in foil. I believe everyone else's ratings were earned before this summer. Congrats everyone, and keep up the good work! :) Member List - The member list has been updated with all of the new members that have paid their dues. Please let me know what your weapon is so I can make it correct; all new people are currently listed under foil so that I don't appear to be making assumptions about your choice (I've opted to make an assumption that you haven't chosen...). Tech Open - Yes, we have about a month until the Tech Open. We will be selling last year's t-shirts as well as a new design that plays on the old one, as they were so popular. Plan to bring cash or a checkbook so you can snag a few! There will most likely be a discount for the purchase of a set (1 old and 1 new) for those that could not get one last year or want another one! E-mail Megan at megan.olsen@vt.edu if you have any Tech Open questions! RAFFLE TICKETS! - We're doing the 50/50 raffle again! Tickets are $1, and the winner gets half the pot and the club gets the other half. Members, be sure to pick up tickets at practice to sell. The raffle will go from now until the Tech Open, on November 14. Any questions or desires to buy tickets should go to the treasurer James at jdeykes@vt.edu. Pictures - All pictures from this year (so far) have been uploaded, and the picture page has gotten a face lift. Pictures from last year will start to show up after I take the GRE next Friday. Socials - October 29th (this Friday!) we will be going to swing dance lessons for free at 7PM. On Oct. 30 we will do our trick-or-treating community service can collection; please come and dress up in a costume! If you have anything you'd like to have the fencing club do for fun (besides fencing, of course!), or have any questions about these events, e-mail the Member-at-Large Jamie at jadalton@vt.edu.
October 16, 2004 - Wow, it's the middle of October! Beginner's Classes - Yes, newbie classes are officially over. The Newbie Tournament in this Sunday the 17th; hopefully most of you will show up! Tournament questions go to me (fenceweb@vt.edu). Dues are due on Monday for any members planning on staying; you can pay after that, but you can't use club equipment until you've paid your dues. Pay dues at McComas Hall during normal business hours. E-mail James at jdeykes@vt.edu if you have questions! Pictures - The picture page is getting updated slowly but surely with pictures from both last year and this year. Now that we're on a new server, we actually have enough space to put lots of pictures! NIWFA Champs from last year has been posted, as well as the demo from this semester. Men's Team - Today was the first MACFA tournament for the men's team. Hopefully they are doing well! The squad captains currently are Paul Youmans for foil and epee (temporarily), and Dustin Arendt for sabre. Their next meet with be on November 6-7 and JHU. Socials - Unfortunately the corn maze was ruined by all of the hurricanes, so there will be no corn maze this year. However, we are looking into other possibilities for a bonfire and other activities for Oct. 29. On Oct. 30 we will do our trick-or-treating community service can collection. If you have anything you'd like to have the fencing club do for fun (besides fencing, of course!) e-mail the Member-at-Large Jamie at jadalton@vt.edu.
October 3, 2004 - New Website! New teams! It's a great year! ;) I'm a member! What did you do? - I updated the members page by who had paid their dues and who I knew was a member that was not required to pay dues (alumni). I had to add a few people that I didn't know weapons of, so make sure your weapon is still correct. If you're not on the list, that means you need to pay dues! Or you paid dues since I got the list. Let me know if you're missing or your info is incorrect! Men's Team - Try-outs have been held. Soon the squad captains will be picked, especially since you have your first meet coming up! Men's Team page will be updated as soon as I have a finalized list of who's where. Community Service, the easy way! - We are jumping on to an event being planned by Golden Key. They are organizing organizations together to collect items for the troops in Iraq. These items will be sent to a group in Roanoke that has been in the paper recently and that send items overseas to troops. A list was sent out on the listserv, and there is a box in the lockers you can put items in during practice. Questions go to me, fenceweb@vt.edu.
September 18, 2004 - Stuff! It's all about the stuff! Who is this Kelley person I just got minutes from?? - Yes, your last minutes e-mail came from Kelley Arbogast, for those not paying attention. She is our current interim Sergeant @ Arms until we can elect a new one. Kristin had too many time constraints and did not feel as though she could devote enough time to her duties; a new permanent person will be elected during the Fall meeting. Dues!! - Some of you are still delinquent on dues! For shame! There will be no gear for you until you pay up! This message does not refer to new members...just the slacking old ones! Men's Team Tryouts - Yep, time to start forming teams! The try-outs for the men's team will be the 27th and 29th of September! Anyone who is a male VT student can try out. Be there, or be square! Women's tryouts will be set after we know when our first meet will actually be... Funds!...Raising!....Fundraising!!! wooo!!!! - We are working on coming up with some good fundraisers, and it looks like we have one for the next couple of weeks! Volunteer to help park cars during the football games; you will get paid $7.50, but then you need to sign that check over to us. This will be a great fundraiser if a lot of people participate (mostly people not going to the game...) and are honest in handing over their checks. E-mail James (jdeykes@vt.edu) if you want to participate. Community Service, the easy way! - We are jumping on to an event being planned by Golden Key. They are organizing organizations together to collect items for the troops in Iraq. These items will be sent to a group in Roanoke that has been in the paper recently and that send items overseas to troops. More information when I get a list from our umbrella organization. Questions go to me, fenceweb@vt.edu.
August 22, 2004 - School time!!!.... Welcome Back! - Everyone ready for school?? Ok, I know I'm not, so you probably aren't either. It's time though. Classes start tomorrow! What does that mean? Practices! woohoo! And you'll start getting minutes again on the listserv, which I know makes you all warm and fuzzy inside. Beginner's Lessons, Demo - The Demo is on Monday Sept. 6th, which is the same day as the start of the beginner's lessons. The demo will start at 7:45PM, and directly afterwards the first beginner's class will commence. After that beginner's classes will be every Monday and Wednesday from 7:30PM to 8:30PM. For more information, Click Here. Old members, please show up to help out! Organization Fair - The organization fair is this Friday, the 27th. It is from 4-8PM in Squires Colonial Ballroom. Old members, please show up to help promote the fencing club! Everyone interested in joining the club, feel free to stop by and see us! We'll be at a booth somewhere (more information on the listserv soon!) Summer results - Our lovely historian gave me summer results about a month ago, and unfortunately my life has been so hectic that I haven't posted them. I promise to post them soon however, now that I'm not sick, not at work all day, and not moving between 4 apartments.
July 11, 2004 - Wow, updates in the summer! woohoo! Website - Currently working on a new design for the website. I have way too many ideas, so I've shared some of them with the officers; I'll be making a decision soon though! The new design won't be up until the entire website has been converted...so one day it will look like this, and the next day it will look completely different! Will be done by the beginning of the school year. :) Tournament Results - New USFA results, as well as Alumni Results, have been sent to me, so they will be going up as soon as possible. This is the first time in about 2 weeks that I've had a reliable internet connection, so if it lasts, they should be up soon. ***edit: they are now up!*** Fall Semester - Yes, it is fast approaching! Only 6 more weeks of summer left! If you haven't been practicing over the summer (like me...), you might want to dust off some gear and get back into things. :) Old Minutes, and other things - So, why haven't the rest of the minutes from last year been posted yet? Well, I was going to wait until the redesign of the site, but I may go ahead and just add them anyway. So...they may or may not show up on the website sometime soon. ***edit: they are now up!***
May 15, 2004 - End of school! yay! Time for summer Summer Practices - Yes, we really do practice during the summer! If you will be in Blacksburg or near by, try to make it! Practicing over the summer is a great way to stay in shape make sure you don't forget what you've learned over the school year. Practice will be Monday - Thursday, 2pm-5pm, in the Dance Room. Summer Contacts - Jen Webster (jewebste@vt.edu) and Laura Golden (lagolden@vt.edu) will act as summer contacts this summer. If you have any questions about what the club is doing during break, please e-mail either one of them to find out. They will also have information for anyone interested in joining next year! Website - All known results have been posted! Newer USFA results and a few corrections will be coming shortly. Feel free to email me if you see any problems on any of the pages! Semester Banquet - Congrats to all of the seniors on receiving your senior swords, and congrats to everyone who got Paper Plate awards! Congratulations to Krista and Laura for being joint-MVPs this year, and the Laurista Goldenzio award! Congratulations also go out to Adam for receiving the newbie award for this semester! We'd also like to thank Jesse for being a great advisor. :) Alumni Tournament - Big success! A million people fenced epee so we got a little behind, but it was still a lot of fun. Results may be posted at some point if I ever get my hands on them. Congrats to Mike Brown for dominating all 3 weapons to get Iron Man! Maybe I'll even post winner pictures if anyone wants to e-mail some to me.... 50/50 Raffle - Yes, the drawing was held April 27th. The winner has been contacted and awarded. The final amount was $110 for the winner, and $110 for the club. Thanks to everyone that played, and look forward to another one next Fall! If you have any questions, e-mail the treasurer at jdeykes@vt.edu. If he doesn't respond (since it's over the summer) e-mail me at fenceweb@vt.edu.
April 13, 2004 - Lots of Updates, lots of transitions Officer Transitions - As most of you know, the new officers took over on April Fool's Day. Transitions are going smoothly, especially now that the Filebox powers have given me access to our website! New Officer Nights will be posted in the Dance Room by Friday, and we're working hard to learn the ways of our predecessors before the end of the semester. Website - Look for all updated results, updated minutes, and other updates files by this Friday, as they will be added throughout the week! The Officer page is newly updated, and 2 more women's result pages have been added at the time of this post. New/renewed ratings have also been set on the Members page. Feel free to email me if you see any problems on any of the new material! Fundraising! - Many of us are working hard to fundraise, and if you aren't, then you should be! If you desire to sell pizza cards, or haven't sold any 50/50 Raffle tickets (or could sell more!) please let an officer know through e-mail or at practice. Don't know our e-mail addresses? Look on the Officer page or in your minutes. :) Alumni Tournament - Lots of exciting planning going on! For more infomation see the minutes (which will soon be posted here, as well as being in your inbox). Plans are for fencing Saturday, Macado's Saturday night, and IHOP brunch on Sunday! Good times to be had by all. Email fenceweb@vt.edu if you aren't on any of the lists (and therefore haven't gotten any emails) and need more information.
February 12, 2004 - Some thoughts and answers to some requests Officer Nights - There has been a request to make officer nights common knowledge. For those of you in the dark, we have scheduled officer nights, so it is guaranteed there will be at least one officer at practice every night to check out gear (obviously excepting when we have to cancel practice due to the funny white or clear stuff). These assigned nights are posted on the bulletin board in the dance room, but for your convenience they are now posted here as well: Checking out gear - It has been brought to attention that people are abusing our poor armourer and not requesting gear far enough in advance causing minor heart attacks and some sleepless nights. Well, not really, but it's still a hassle. That being said, the following is a public service announcement designed to keep our armourer sane: Track Fundraiser - You guys have been wonderful about signing up for time slots for the track fundraiser! There are just a few slots left on Saturday night and on one Friday night that need to be filled. If you haven't signed up, or can work an extra shift, please e-mail Jennifer ASAP. She has sent out an e-mail to remind people of when they signed up...please make sure you are there!! MACFA Champs - We are still in the planning stages, although we are just about done. Yay us! We are going to need everyone's help with timing/scoring and with keeping your officers sane that day! That being said, we will have a sign-up sheet starting next week for people who can help out with champs. And no, if you are fencing, we don't expect you to sign up to help out... Updates - Results from the VA Cup are up, events have been updated, and the latest minutes are up. That is all.
January 29, 2004 - Whole mess load of updates and some important info Demo and Beginner's lessons - Come one, come all to the fencing demo! It will be held February 2nd at 7:45pm in the dance room. Current members, please show up at 7:30 to help set-up. Beginner's lessons will begin immediately after the demo and will run for six weeks on Monday and Wednesday nights from 7:30-8:30. MACFA Jan 31-Feb 1 - There is a Men's Team event this weekend up at JHU. If you are on the team, you already know the details, but for the sake of repetition...meet at War Friday afternoon at 3:00 pm. We will be leaving as soon as we can get the vans packed, and will be staying with the Marschner's in MD, as usual. We fence 2 teams on Saturday and 4 on Sunday and will be heading back as soon as fencing finishes. And YES, we know it's Super Bowl weekend...sorry! Ratings Rally - Seeing as we all have a free weekend, everyone who is eligible should go to the Ratings Rally on February 7-8! Great experience for new fencers and fun for old fencers to change weapons and whoop up on some new fencers! :) More info (times, location, etc...) is on the Event Schedule page and on the USFA-VA Div website. E-mail the listserv if you need to try to find a ride or a place to stay. Track Fundraiser - Because we don't like being poor, we are hosting a track meet on February 13-14 as a fundraiser. The catch? We need everyone there to help. There will be 3 time slots available to work, 1 Friday night and 2 Saturday (1 morning and 1 afternoon/evening). We are requiring that everyone help out because, hey, you guys use the equipment we have to buy and because you love the fencing club so much! A sign-up sheet will be posted soon in the dance room on our board, and we are asking that everyone sign up for 2 time slots. Questions, complaints, concerns...direct them towards any officer. MACFA Champs - If you haven't figured it out by now, we are hosting MACFA champs here on February 29th. We are going to need ALL the help we can, and therefore we are making attendance at set-up the night before and at the actual champs (even if you aren't fencing) MANDATORY! All complaints can be directed to the brick wall over there, or if you are brave, e-mail our prez and face her unholy wrath... Pictures - Pictures from the UNC tournament have been posted under (go figure) Pictures! Go check them out! Many thanks to Alex for getting a page together for them! Updates - Jamie Dalton is the new sabre squad captain; minutes have been updated. That is all. January 07, 2004 - Happy New Year and all that jazz Season's Greetings - Merry Christmas, Feliz Navidad, Buon Natale, Happy New Year, and all that good stuff. Hope everyone had a great winter break and can't wait for fencing to start up again! Updates - Small updates have been made...minutes have been updated through the end of the Fall semester and the event schedule has been updated, tweaked, and fixed. Check it out! November 11, 2003 Additions and Events MACFA - A big congrats is in order to the gents that fenced this weekend up at Hopkins. Great fencing guys! And how 'bout that home cookin'? Also, the correct Men's team roster has been posted. Women's Team - Women's Foil and Sabre tryouts have taken place, with the results posted on the Women's team page. In case you haven't read your email, THE VIRGINIA TECH OPEN is THIS WEEKEND!!!
SCHEDULE:
Saturday:
Sunday:
If you are not going to fence, come on our and help support your team and teammates! Also, next week we will be making a jacket order! Why is this important you might ask? If you are interested in getting a VTFC windbreaker (they cut the Drillfield wind very well!) and if you help out at the Open, you will get a discount on your jacket order! So come on out and help! And send the Alex an email if you are interested in getting a jacket! September 24, 2003 Clear Your Calendars! Thats right folks, the tournament schedule has been updated! Go check it out! If you were born in 1984 or later, take special note of the Junior Olympics Qualifiers! September 15, 2003 Updates! The latest minutes have been posted to the archive. If anyone is interested, there are currently 167 people on our mailing list, and about 40 beginners showed up to the second of the beginner's classes. Lets hear it for the beginners! *applause* Our lovely Treasurer Jen Webster is still on the war path for dues - they are DUE TODAY at practice! So be there! Again, beginners do not need to worry about paying dues until the END of the beginner's lessons. The tournament this weekend was a blast. An innacurate count yielded the following facts:
September 11, 2003 Important Announcements for Members! Members: The Treasurer is on the warpath! DUES are DUE!. Dues for VT students are $55.00 for this semester, or $100.00 for the year. Yes, dues have gone up from last year, but the number of conferences in which we compete has also gone up. Please get your dues in now! If you have any questions, email Jen Webster. Beginners: Don't worry about dues until the end of the beginners class! September 10, 2003 Lessons, Beginners, and Upcoming Events Beginner's Lessons The beginners lessons are in progress! They are running on Monday and Wednesday nights, from 7:30 to about 8:30, in room 37A (the dance room) in War Memorial Gym. If you missed the first two classes, never fear! You can still come to the lessons! Just find an officer and let them know that you need to be brought up to speed! The lessons will continue for five more weeks! Upcoming Events Several big events are coming up on our fencing schedule! This weekend is the USFA Kickoff Open, an individual event that marks the beginning of the 2003-2004 National fencing season. Also, on September 20th the VT Women's team is holding a collegiate tournament here at Tech! Current members need to email Laura Golden, the Women's team Captain, and let her know if they can compete. Beginners and other members are invited to come out and cheer the Women on! August 26, 2003 Welcome Back! So many things to do and so little time in which to do them! We at the Virginia Tech Fencing Club for the Advancement of Sabre Monkies would
like to offer our best wishes to you this semester! Really! In fact, we want you to become a part of the Fencing Club! Check this out:
June 22, 2003 Happy Anniversary! The VTFC would like to wish a Happy One Year Anniversary to Brighid and Eric Moret! May 18, 2003 A Clear Inbox Pressure on the cell membranes in my inbox due to an overflow of unanswered or at least unfiled emails caused me to do the unheard of and actually post the minutes for the last three months. Things (features, data, stuff, etc.) that are coming include results from MACFA, MACFA/NIWFA/VIWFA Champs, and NCCFC, pictures of the officers, officer night postings (yeah, so those last two will wait until next semester, but they *are* coming), Mansfield's Rules (it can't be a work in progress if we don't make progress!), and a change in the format of the calendar page from the current lazy format to something that actually looks like a calendar (if you want to know why the current format is "lazy," go look at the Virginia Division's calendar page ;-)). May 01, 2003 Happy Beltane! The VTFC website is in demand! We have had two requests from overseas gear manufacturers to post links to their websites on our links page. ESUN, based in Hong Kong, China, and Duellist, somewhere in London, England, both would like you to peruse and purchase. I might note that shipping charges would probably outweigh any conceivable benefit from buying from European vendors, but that is of course for you to decide. With that said, I hope everyone enjoyed the end-of-the-year banquet last night, congrats to all the Seniors, and to everyone, Good Luck on Exams! April 16, 2003 Summer in the City For everyone that is interested in fencing here this summer, we now have summer hours and room assignments. For questions about summer practice, please email Mike Maloy or Aaron Caba. SUMMER HOURSWhen: Monday - Thursday from 2:00pm to 5:00pm Where: Dance Room (rm37) in War Memorial Gym. March 27, 2003 Spring is in the air . . . Once again the campus comes alive and you are reminded that there are actually *students* that live here, not just the winter wind. Spring also means that some other things are going on, so make sure you know about:
On a side note, I am really interested in what people have to say about the website. What do we need? What would make it more useful? Is it even useful to begin with? Do we need more references to animals? How about to M&M's? Let me know what you think! February 23, 2003 Updates! Here's a quick list of all the updates I did this weekend:
And without further ado, I am going to go play Warcraft. January 6, 2003 Happy New Year! With the beginning of the new year, we see all sorts of things coming our way, and I'm sure everyone cannot wait to get back
to Tech and start fencing practice again! Heh . . . don't all scream for joy at once. But now for something completely the
same: a brief summation of all the fun things we have planned for this semester! January 5, 2003 Website Updates! As always, comments and constructive criticism are welcome: December 16, 2002 Snickers - Wanna Crunch Something? Just a little topical exam-time jest there . . . good luck to all on your finals!
December 06, 2002 It Snowed! I would just like to say that actually getting snow in the winter is a blast, the folks who came up to Roanoke for the Tournament with their beginner class rock, and as of five minutes ago all the directions links on the Event Schedule page were newly working. So yes, they should be working now as well. Good luck to all who are going to the Ratings Rally this weekend! December 02, 2002 Correction! The Semester Banquet will be held on the evening of Wednesday, December 11th, not December 12th, as a previous post incorrectly indicated. Which is to say that you can unwind from your last day of classes with the folks from the Fencing Club at El Guads! Come on down . . . November 29, 2002 Up and Coming Here are the club events that remain for this semester:
November 28, 2002 Is your Christmas Tree up yet? So the website has been sliding along for a little while now, not much has been done to it. This could be because the last four weekends (actually five) before the Thanksgiving Break were fencing weekends. That's certainly the excuse I'm going to use. In any case, here's whats new:
Get involved: Bug the Webmonkey! November 13, 2002 Is dis thine cuckoo-clock? Right.
November 11, 2002 Just kidding . . . I have results and pictures from the VA Cup this past weekend, and pictures from the last social event. Both things will NOT be posted by the end of this weekend, since that ended three hours ago. We went to the W&M Open, so I got nothing done. Tough cookies. But sometime late this week, look for a massive update. You might not find it, but do look for it. October 23, 2002 MEN'S WEAPON TEAMS POSTED The fence-offs for MACFA Men's team placings were completed this evening at practice and the results are posted on the Men's Team page! Congratulations to all who made the team, and thanks to everyone who tried out! Remember, just because you did not make the competition team this time does not mean that you cannot challenge up for a spot on the team later on in the year. So keep coming, keep practicing, and give us all a run for our money! And for everyone who made the team, take note: the Virginia Cup is THIS SUNDAY!! Minutes Archive and Member list Update Oh yeah, and the last five sets of minutes from the officer's meetings are posted and the Members list has been updated with the names, emails, and weapon ratings of everyone who has paid dues so far this semester. October 21, 2002 Ice Skating: The Aftermath On the 12th of October our Member at Large, the lovely Jessica Ball organized a social event, "Fencers on Ice." So we all packed up and went to the Ice Station ice rink in Roanoke. For pictures and a story, Click Here. Also, I updated the vendors list on the Links page to include a couple more websites for vendors such as Blue Gauntlet and The Fencing Post. More choices, and ZILLIONS of GREAT DEALS! October 14, 2002 Birthday! Thats right, Sarge shall now be referred to as Grandpa Sarge! Happy Birthday to the Sgt. at Arms, Ryan Wemhoff! October 10, 2002 More Updates! Yup, I've been at it again, this time updating the Men's and Women's Team pages. You will notice that the 2002-2003 competition teams have not been chosen yet, so if you are interested, check out the team pages and email the weapon captains! October 08, 2002 Mad Updatez! Sorry it took me so long to get to some of this: Speaking of fencing events, I would like to take this opportunity to invite all of our new fencers to try out for any of the Collegiate Competition teams. We need fencers! Go check out the team's pages on the website, and talk to the team captain of the weapon you are interested in to find out when the fence-off for team spots will be held. Pending: - There are new pictures from practice that need to be put up. Heckle me about it, and it will get done much sooner. Then you can direct all those annoying relatives who want to know about what you've been doing in college to some nifty pictures of you in your spiffed-up fencing duds. September 25, 2002 Birthday! To Our Fearless Leader, Jen Lin ----> HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! September 19, 2002 Large Webpage Update! Here is a list of all the updates: September 12, 2002 Website Additions! Prod the WebMonkey and Ye Shall Receive. Someone prodded in the right spot (and gave me mucho material to work with) and now we have a page of directions to Virginia Tech and a nifty colorful map of the "safe" parking spaces around campus for visiting fencers. Please direct your eyes to the "Directions" link in the menubar, or just click here. September 09, 2002 Fall02 Beginners' Class!! Everyone please extend a warm welcome to all the beginning fencers in our beginners' class! Beginners' classes run from 7:30PM to 8:30PM Mondays and Wednesdays in the Dance Room in War Memorial gym. Current club members, please make an effort to turn out at Monday and Wednesday practices and meet our new fencers! August 29, 2002 Upcoming Events! This Friday - the club fair will be going on in Squire's Student Center from 4:00pm to 8:00pm. Bring your friends and come by the fencing booth! Current fencers - please come on out and help us raise interest in the fencing club! September 03 - Mandatory Workshop for all Officers from 5:30 to 8:00 PM in Squires Old Dominion Ballroom. Sessions start at 9:00am, and each session costs $5.00. Look for the flyer on the cork board in the dance room for more information. September 09 - Bi-Annual Demo and the first Beginner's Class. All current club members are asked to attend! Please dress out! Come ready to help with the demo and meet our future fellow fencers. ALSO this is the deadline for Death Forms and dues for current club members. September 23 - Bi-Annual Meeting! On the board: Running the Tech Open and some proposed changes to the Constitution. August 20, 2002 USFA - New Link If you have ever wanted a reference chart for how ratings are assigned at USFA events, read this. August 17, 2002 USFA - VA Div Schedule News from the Virginia Divison! We have a division schedule! As time permits I will post it right here (click on the "Event Schedule" link in the left menubar), but sneak-previews are available on the division website. For folks who have never been a member of the USFA, take a brief gander and just think about all the fun you could have at these multitudinous events. And then send in your registration forms! Update: the Events Schedule has been updated! Check it out!. July 27, 2002 USFA Rule Changes Click here for a list of the new USFA rules that will be put into effect as of August 1, 2002.
Hey all - under prodding (webmonkeys work best with a mixture of prodding & bananas) I've made a couple minor cosmetic changes to the page: Virginia is now spelled right on the "About" page, the asterisks are larger in the "Members" page, and the VTFC sock color code is now explained on the "Members" page as well (scroll down). Oh yeah, and I added a counter to the menu. July 15, 2002 Summer newsflash! Item 1 --> For all those who didn't know, our practice hours are no longer cut for next semester! Tech looked at the proposal for cut hours at War Memorial, told War, "Gee, that sucks." War said, "Why yes, it does!" Tech said, "Never mind then, keep your old hours." So we have our space! Item 2 --> We have a new advisor! Everyone please welcome Mr. Jesse Richardson to the party! Item 3 --> The mantle of the Webmaster has been passed down according to tradition, so if weird stuff happens on the webpage in the near future,
feel free to send complaints here.
Actually, feel free to poke around the website lots; many links have been fixed (and many broken, I'm sure), and things have been "tweaked" here and there.
Please let me know what you think.
April 26, 2002 More minutes. Roster is up to date. April 20, 2002 More color changes, this time to the Results page. The correct year is on the Pictures page too. The alumni tournament is in progress, results will be posted tomorrow. April 09, 2002 Apparently the web site hasn't been updating correctly... if you do not see this message then it is still acting up. Anyway, now a link has actually been added to the MACFA 2002 Champs results. Take a look! (Link is also available in the Results section). **Edit: 12:07am April 10. Later, that same evening, minutes are posted. Also, Minutes, the Pictures page, and the Constitution are altered to be white-on-black to match the rest of the site. As was pointed out to me, it looked pretty ugly :) ** April 04, 2002 More minutes. A couple days late, but better late than never! :) March 27, 2002 More minutes and the results from 2002 MACFA Champs! See the reports section! March 22, 2002 All Minutes are updated and the results for the MACFA 2002 Championships are being typed in. Results should be available online in the morning. January 30, 2002 Ok, after a hectic few weeks of school I finally have time to work on this site. Updates will be more regular from now on. All the latest Minutes are available for your viewing pleasure. The Men's and Women's team rosters have been updated (thanks to Alex for the info here). The USFA events have been updated to show tournaments for this year. MACFA is still unchanged at the moment, but it will be changed later tonight or tomorrow. Also coming will be the results from the recent Women's meet at Sweetbriar. January 25, 2001 As most of you know, I have taken over the care taking of the website. So there should be more recent posts, more information on upcoming tournaments, more tournament results, etc.
25 October, 2001 Okay, so I have been slacking off lately. However, the rumors are true, Graduate school does require insane rituals to be performed in order to graduate on time. And now for something completly different: Last months minutes are posted, so now everyone knows what we already did. 2 October, 2001 The new phone books are here! The new phone books are here! Errr...I mean we have a vice president! Welcome to Jessica Ball's new reign of terror. In addition, the club is kicking around the following ideas for activities: Midnight Bowling, Lazor Tag, the rock climbing wall in Roanoke/Salem (don't remember which), Movie (as in going to the theater :-P), Hiking, Camping, and Paintball. Finally, discussions about pushing forward Varsity status are occurring more and more frequently. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns feel free to e-mail rpurnell@vt.edu or express them at any of the officers meetings (Thursday's 6:00 @ our place). 28 September, 2001 The minutes are (hopefully) now up to date. Don't forget to come to the 1 October practice to participate in the Vice Presidential election. Suggestions are also being taken during practice and on the listserv for club social type gatherings. Also, If anyone was paying attention to the events as they are posted, you will have noticed that movies of the demo were promised. Sadly, after a thermonuclear meltdown involving much foul language and wild gesticulations, the movies were lost :( Attempts to recover the film are in progress. 27 September, 2001 Minutes. Posted. Elections on Monday. Be. there. 14 September, 2001 This weeks minutes have been duly posted. Enjoy! 10 September, 2001 The demo went well. Kudos to those who participated both in the demo and the first lesson that followed. We hope that interested parties continue their adventures in fencing. Soon there will be some movies of the fencing and other nonsense that occurred this evening. Be patient. Pictures have been posted already :). Also, the USFA and MACFA tournament schedules have been posted on the schedule page. 30 August, 2001 People, really, if anything needs to be changed, let fenceweb@vt.edu know! 20 February, 2001 The short play, I mean minutes, from the 16th of February have been posted. They are receiving rave reviews from audiences across the nation, and there is talk of a broadway show in the works. 3 December, 2000 The new constitution has been posted. 2 December, 2000 Stop what you're doin', cause I'm about to ruin the image and the style that you're used to...Now gather round, cause I'm the new fool in town... In the tradition of fine web masters before me, I vow to keep the web page up to date for the next 12 hours, before I lose interest in it and let it fall by the wayside again. --Ricky 21 September, 2000 You may have noticed that the site looks a little different. Take a look around! Any comments or criticisms are welcome, as I hope this site will be an ongoing project for some time. |
